John McCarron

Urban affairs writer, teacher, consultant

College of Communications and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He also served as vice-president for strategy and communication at the Metropolitan Planning Council and worked with LISC/Chicago and the MacArthur Foundation to develop, evaluate and chronicle the New Communities Programs.

During his 27 years at the Chicago Tribune, he reported on urban affairs, edited the financial section, and member of the editorial board. He continues as a columnist. His work also appears in Planning magazine and the Gateway Journalism Review published by Southern Illinois University’s School of Journalism. He is a frequent guest on public television’s Chicago Tonight: The Week in Review.

His journalism has won the Peter Lisagor Award, the Chicago Press Veterans Association award, the Heywood Broun award, and the American Planning Association national prize.
